Members News – June

FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Members,  an update from the Board Room.

Following the rejection of the recent Glades \ SPGC swap proposal by the Members, the Board have just received  a revised offer from the Consortium, whilst this new offer is an improvement from a Financial point of view the Board is still of the opinion that the majority of Members may prefer to stay at our present location.

The article that appeared in The Bulletin recently regarding the Members of SPGC voting against the Glades Proposal has prompted a considerable amount of interest from other Parties, one of which the Board has decided to investigate further as a viable option to staying at our present location.
It is the Boards intention to review the presentation by this group and then potentially offer this proposal along with the revised one from the Glades Group for discussions leading up to our AGM.

On another matter, the Club will be holding a Sportsmans Lunch on Friday the 6th July, which is the Friday before the Third State of Origin match, the day will be hosted by “ Fat Cat” Greg Ritchie with Alfie Langer, Paul Vautin, Mark Carrol, and Rob Heathcote as guest speakers. The theme is a “ Prawn and Cutlet “ State of Origin Lunch with proceeds of the day allocated to the development of the SPGC Junior Golf Programme.  As well there will be some fantastic Raffle Prizes from Kooralbyn Ramada Resort, Mantra Resort and a Twelve Month Golf Membership of SPGC, to mention a few. There will also be a couple of Auctions of the current State of Origin Qld. and NSW jerseys.

Tickets are $150 pp all-inclusive; drinks package is from 12:00 to 4:00 pm.

Please support this Lunch as we would like to turn it into an annual event at the Club.

FROM THE BUNKER

Dear Members,

I was lucky enough to attend the State Of Origin at the MCG this month as part of my 10-day road trip holiday with my father, and together we covered 3500km through country NSW and Victoria.  It really was a good trip even if a little cold at times for us Queenslanders!, but mostly it was a great opportunity to spend some quality time with my dad.

A BIG reminder of the “Win a Year of Golf On Us” promotion draws taking place on the 23rd (Woman) and the 30th June (Men).

We are giving away two seven day golf memberships for the year, and it’s our way of thanking the golf membership for supporting the Club. Every time you have spent $5 or more in the Clubhouse over the past 5 or so weeks, you will have received a ticket to put in the barrel, both draw nights will be a lot of fun with live music and seafood trays up for grabs. Bookings for the Bistro on both nights are selling fast so make sure you don’t wait too long to book a table.

You will have noticed that a few gardens were taken out around the course, there were a number of reasons for this, but mostly they were just high maintenance with low impact which is not a good combination.  So they have been replaced with turf which looks clean to the eye and has opened up the course a little as well, this, in turn, will help our greens team to concentrate on areas of the course which really need more time spent to bring them up to a much higher standard all year round.

And that’s me for another month.

Thank you as always, and I hope to see you around the Clubhouse soon.

CAPTAIN’S CORNER

Hi Golfers,

Winter is back, and so is the 5th Green.

I’m sure everyone is pleased to have this hole back in play. The green is still very new but is settling down nicely. Please repair your pitch marks.

The age-old problem of bunkers not being raked properly is back again. Be mindful of others and rake the bunkers after you have had your shot. Nobody enjoys being in the bunkers, but if you rake the area you used, it makes for happy players who use the bunkers after you.

A huge congratulations go to 3 young boys who have advanced from 9 hole Cadets to 18 hole juniors.

Liam Cafferkey. Age 12

Emon Lennon. Age 8

Elijah Rohas-Smith. Age 11

Your progress is excellent. Keep up the good work.

Tree pruning around the course will begin shortly. Hopefully, that limb that sticks out and grabs your ball will be one of those removed over the next few weeks.

The nomination sheets for Inter-Club Pennants have been put up on the notice board in the. Club. If you are interested in playing, put your name down. Inter Club is a great way to meet golfers from other clubs and play different courses.

Good Golfing.
Greg

BEN’S TIP

Hi everyone I have a myth buster topic for you this month.

Don’t lift your head. The single most destructive myth out there and has been I’m sure since golf nearly first originated. The go-to fix and hot tip for so many players it’s mind-boggling.

Your head doesn’t lift; it gets pushed up by your lower body. I have never seen anyone just lift their head because they suddenly thought it’s a good idea.

Your head lifting is a result, not a choice. If you feel your head lifting trying to keep it down will only make things worse.

Keeping your head down restricts your body movements and puts more stress on your back.

If you’re a believer in keeping your head down, please…

Find out why your head is lifting don’t just beat your head against a brick wall. Also please please don’t tell anyone else to keep their head down, you’re only making players worse and increasing their risk of injury.

I am more than happy to talk to anyone anytime to explain this is more detail and help rid the golfing world of this myth.

Good luck out there and watch the ball fly!

Kind regards

Ben Jewell

THE WORKING BEE

Hello everyone

We have completed two working bees since the last newsletter, with the following projects being tackled.

Extensive poisoning of nut grass, particularly around the tee blocks.
Clearing garden area adjacent to the 1st tee, hopefully reducing buggy parking congestion.  Pruning/ poisoning and cleaning up the area along our Northern boundary fence.

All tables in the clubhouse which required lowering have been done.  Extensive tidy up the loading dock area, including the replacement of timber shelving for improved storage.

Completed some edging as well as garden maintenance.

Until next time –  enjoy your Golf.

 ALL SPORTS

This year’s winners of the Harry Nesbit trophy are Ron Dickson and Jurg Metzger, with a score of 50 (4 BBBB). A brief description of Harry’s life achievements was delivered by Peter Clay, which was much appreciated, especially by those who never had the pleasure of knowing him.

The Monthly Medal winners for May are A Grade- John Canning, B Grade- Gill Fischer.

Recent events have prompted a comment regarding scorecards. By signing your scorecards, you are accepting and attesting to the accuracy of the recorded scores. It follows therefore that cards should only be signed after the game. As the marker, you are responsible for the monitoring, and accurate recording of your partners play. Whereas the marker is not required to record his score, it is highly recommended, as it helps in resolving any subsequent disputes. Once a scorecard is entered into the Score Box it is considered “tabled”, and no changes to it are permissible under any circumstances. We should treat the Score Box as if it were locked.

Nice to see Ian Wilson and Roy Wagstaff back on the course after a lengthy rehabilitation.

Happy golfing.
