History of Surfers Paradise Golf Club

The Surfers Paradise Golf Club was officially opened on Saturday 21 December 1968 by His Excellency Sir Alan Mansfield, Governor of Queensland. After cutting the ribbon, Sir Alan, a keen golfer, walked to the 1st tee where he handed Captain Warwick Thomas the first ball to be hit in the 9-hole golf exhibition game between 10 visiting pros and 10 leading amateurs.

In August 1968 Ken Eglit, President, approved the first Associates Committee. Lady members stood at 130 at that time. Mr Eglit said at a meeting which he chaired that it was time for an Associate’s Committee. The first Associates committee formed included Mrs E Costa president and Mrs I Perrett vice-president.

Captain Mrs A Hodges; Vice-Captain Mrs A Nicholls; Treasurer Mrs K Wiltshire; Secretary Mrs M Lillie and Handicap Manager Mrs L Whiffen. Other Committee members were Mrs L Wilkinson and Miss T Lance.
Club President, Geoff Burchill (1969-1970) invited Associates to attend all club meetings. The ladies were particularly helpful in raising much need funds during the early years.

130 lady members played their first “get-together” 9-hole competition followed by tea. The first monthly medal was played early in 1969. Further major competitions followed with The Richard Rainger Memorial and Joan Irving Jug first played in 1969; The King Salver in 1974.
In 1969, in association with Southport Golf Club, the go ahead for the 1970 Associates Country Championships was given.
The South Pacific Ladies Open Classic was first played in 1973 with Pam Rainger and Joan Irving organising the event for many years.

Pam Thrower

Joined as a casual employee in 1983, mainly to update membership on the new computer system.

Pam was an A Grade hockey player and an A Grade squash player. Pam took up golf so that she could know a bit about the game when speaking to members and visitors. Pam won the B Grade ladies section of the Jupiters Pro-Am event held at Surfers in 1989.

It was a speciality that Pam knew every member of the club, along with their membership number and many personal details and was The Sheriff who single-handedly ran the front desk with proficiency and decorum. Pam retired in April 2020 and looks forward to playing some serious golf.

Terry Williams

Terry was well known and loved by the “Associates”. She was in the New Zealand Army and put this training and dedication to all she took on.

She was a Business Lady and occasionally played on Thursdays in club championships. She was a strong supporter of the Saturday ladies and played Business Ladies Pennant for many years. In the late 90’s she took on the responsibility of managing the Business Ladies competitions, carrying out the function of producing the results and presentations.

One interesting fact is that Terry insisted that she always played with a number 3 golf ball.

She was appointed Ladies Committee Secretary in the 90’s and continued in this capacity until her death in 2008.

The Terry Williams Memorial Trophy was first played in 2009 in her memory. The first monthly medal of the year between the Business Ladies and Thursday ladies is a single stroke event.
